Tongue

X-ray photographs of the tongue positions of 4 cardinal vowels, pronounced by Daniel Jones. A chain of small lead plates strung together was placed on the tongue to show its outline. The red dot marks the highest point of the tongue. The purple cross is a point of reference near the end of the hard palate. The photographs were taken by Dr. H. Trevelyan George, in January 1917.
Note the differences in the relative position of the red dot, in these 4 cardinal vowels.
